Connacht Cross Country
It was proper cross-country conditions on Saturday last at Moyne Community School for the Connacht Primary Schools Championships and Leg 1 of the Senior League. A busy couple of hours of racing saw over 550 participants from across the region. Well done to all that took part and congratulations to the medal winners. Many thanks to everyone that helped with the staging of the event and to Moyne CS for the use of their facilities.

The local highlight of the day came in the girls’ 5th/6th class 1200m with Sophia Carey’s superb silver medal winning run crossing the line in second place of the 135 finishers. This helped Sophia and her Scoil Mhuire Newtownforbes teammates of Darcey Brady, Alisha Manning, Emily McVeigh, Cara Dorr and Aoibhe Sutherland win gold in the team event in yet another sporting success that the girls have enjoyed this year.

Melview’s Andrew Fitzpatrick placed fourth in the boys’ 3rd/4th class 1000m with a fantastic run and Andrew will be still eligible for this race next year also. Across the events; there were top-15 finisher medals achieved as well by Jessica Neary, Holly Brady, Sarah Connolly, Darcey Brady, Rian McCaffrey and Daniel Higgins.

In the Senior League, Fiona Gettings produced another excellent run in finishing second with Emma Brennan showing her strength over the 4km distance in eighth place.
