Silver for Sophia
An excellent run by Sophia Carey on Sunday saw her finish 17th, and win a national silver medal as part of the Connacht team, in the Under-14 girls race at the All-Ireland Even Ages Cross Country Championships in Donegal. On a fast course, with some narrow parts on the lap, Sophia found herself in the early stages crowded in on the inside. As the large field began to stretch out, she showed her strength to move up several positions to finish fast for a top 20 placing of the 172 finishers. Well done Sophia.
Sophia was the fourth scorer for the Connacht team which won silver medals for second place in the provincial team standings. Congratulations to Sophia and the girls many of whom, including Sophia, will be running in the Under-13 race at the All-Irelands in Cork in two weeks when hopefully more national success will be achieved.
Congratulations to Yemi Talabi, Fiona Gettings and Cian McPhillips for being named among the ten winners of the Longford Leader Sports Star Awards in association with Longford Sports Partnership. Well done also to 11-year-old John Fitzpatrick who was named as the Junior Sportsperson winner after his five national gold medals won in 2022. Awards will be presented to the recipients on December 2.
