Weekly Notes – 20th Dec 2021

Season’s Greetings
Wishing a very Happy Christmas and New Year to all our members and their families. Details on the resumption of weekly athletics and club membership will be confirmed in January ahead of the opening of our indoor athletics centre at St. Mel’s College in early 2022.

As 2021 draws to a close, we can look back at the great successes enjoyed by Cian McPhillips during the year. He reached new levels when winning 1500m gold at the European Under 20 Championships and setting national junior records for the indoor 800m and outdoor 1500m. The latter, resulting from his 3:40.56 run in July, took two seconds off the previous record held by Longford’s Ray Flynn for 45 years. Cian was recently recognised as the Connacht Male Athlete of the Year by the Connacht Athletics judging panel. We look forward to following Cian’s progress in 2022 as well as watching our club members thrive in the new indoor facility.

Road Races
At the time of writing, two local road races are scheduled to take place during the festive period. Killasonna NS is holding a 5k and a 2k family fun run on St. Stephens Day. Registration opens at 11.30am with the run starting at 12.30pm. Also, the Ardagh 10 mile and 5k will be on January 2 at 1pm and it will include a Primary Schools one mile run as well. Register for Ardagh in advance of the day at the MyRunResults website.
