Cross Country Success
There was superb double silver medal success at the final national championships of the club cross-country season which took place in Dundalk on Sunday last. In challenging underfoot conditions, Emma Brennan showed her strength to place second in the Under-17 3000m girls race held as part of the Juvenile B Championships. A confident display of front running by Emma who just missed out on gold at the end behind the fast-finishing Della McLoughlin (Oughaval AC, Laois). It was an excellent performance by Emma who was running one year up in age group.

The soft ground made for an energy-sapping 4000m in the Masters women’s race which followed with Fiona Gettings to the fore from the start. In a true test of speed and endurance, Fiona stayed in the medal places throughout to place second of the 116 finishers following a brilliant run. Fiona continues to be an inspiration to all the senior club members showing off our colours proudly on the national and international stage.

In the earlier juvenile races in Dundalk, Julie Taitt, Jessica Neary and Sarah Taitt each had good runs in the girls Under-13 1500m with Conor Brennan also running strongly over the same distance in the boy’s race. It was 2500m for Daniel Higgins, Rian McCaffrey and Oisín Dillon in the Under-15 boys event. Unfortunately, Rian had to stop during the race due to injury while Daniel and Oisín both placed well in the end despite the tough conditions.

Juvenile Star Award
There was further achievement for Emma who has been named by Athletics Ireland as the County Longford Juvenile Star Award recipient for 2023. A well-deserved accolade for such a determined young athlete who had a very successful year with All-Ireland medals won on the track and cross-country. Emma will receive her award at a function in March.
