In the US, Yemi Talabi ran a personal best for the 60m last Friday at the Western Conference Championships in Washington State. The University of Texas Arlington final year student clocked a swift 7.41 seconds when placing fifth. It’s the joint-third fastest time by an Irish woman this indoor season.

Another local athlete Stateside is Nelvin Appiah at the University of Louisiana Lafayette. Nelvin was also in action last week at the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Alabama at which he competed in the seven-event Heptathlon. Following a long competition, Nelvin placed fifth in the standings having completed the likes of the 60m Hurdles, High Jump and Pole Vault.

Closer to home, Oisín Dillon made the trip to Dublin on Wednesday last to run in the Under-16 800m at Track & Field Live. He was rewarded for his strong front running performance with a personal best time of 2:07 while just being edged into second place at the finish line.

Fiona Gettings also made the midweek trip to Abbotstown for the women’s 800m recording another good run as she continues her preparations ahead of next weekend’s National Masters.

On the roads, John Scott travelled to south Galway for Saturday’s Kinvara three-quarter marathon. A strong run clocking 2:03.44 and a sixth-place finish for John as he keeps the training rolling on ahead of the Boston Marathon in April.

The main senior club training session of the week is on Tuesdays from 7pm meeting at the Longford Athletics Centre, St. Mel’s College. New members welcome.
