Athletics Ireland National Juvenile Indoor Championships – All-Ireland Relay Finals

All-Ireland Relay Finals, 7th April 2018 at Athlone IT Arena

Heartbreak for Longford Athletic Club as two teams finish in 4th place, narrowly missing places on the podium at last weekend’s All-Ireland Relay finals in Athlone.

The Athletics Ireland programme listed 188 teams from across the country in the U12-19 age groups that had earned their place on the starting line to compete for National titles. Pride of place is at stake as Clubs try to ensure they have the right combination of speed and experience in the team they select. As expected Leevale AC, Cork, dominated in the older age groups winning 3 sets of Gold in u17-18-19 Boys races.

After relay success over the last few years Longford had their hopes dashed in February at Connacht level when two of their fastest teams were disqualified for zone violations after batons were dropped during hand over exchanges. Recent injuries then forced the U19 Boys team to pull out only days before the final so Longford travelled to AIT with only 3 teams this year.

Longford AC U15 Girls 4X200m Relay team Avril Cosgrove, Kaela Brady, Sarah McPhillips, Kate Hagan and Funmi Talabi finished in 7th place overall at last weekend’s Athletics Ireland National Indoor Relay Championships at Athlone IT International Arena.

Athletics Ireland National Juvenile Indoor Championships – Day 3

200m and 800m events, 25th March 2018 at Athlone IT Arena

The Programme on Day 3 started with 200m heats for the U16-19 athletes. Travelling to Athlone with an injury Nelvin Appiah was forced to pull out after the warm up and did not compete on the day. This was all the more regrettable as Nelvin’s Connacht qualifying time would have seen him extremely competitive for a podium place had he ran in the final. After the heats Killian Rawle, U17 Boys, was 10th of the competitive field of 17, time 23.86 seconds, and therefore did not progress further. He can be satisfied taking home a new pb, showing continued improvement from his performance at the start of the indoor season at the National Junior Championship in January (24.12 sec). Gospel Idahor ran well but did not get out of her heat. She utilised the occasion to network with other teenage athletes picking up tips on injecting more speed into her training sessions…. [Read More]
