It was a great honour for the club to have been recognised by Cathaoirleach Micheal Carrigy and Longford County Council at a civic reception held in St. Mel’s College on Friday evening last. 2019 marked 50 years since the founding of our club and this milestone was acknowledged at the event. Many of those who were instrumental in keeping the club going over the decades were present as well as many of our current juvenile and senior athletes / committee. As part of the evening, three of our athletes were among those who each received a Longford County Council Sports Bursary to recognise their achievements during the year. Congratulations to Yemi Talabi, Cian McPhillips and Nelvin Appiah. Thanks to the County Council and Longford Sports Partnership for a great evening and well done to all those honoured on the night for their sporting successes as well as all the bursary recipients.

Results Roundup

Sinead and Niall Nolan swapped the wintry Longford weather for blue skies to run at the Lanzarote Half Marathon on Saturday last. Well done to both on great runs and congratulations to Sinead whose time of 1:37 earned her third place in her age category. Here’s hoping for some Lanzarote-type warmth to make its way to Newtownforbes for the 5k race on December 26th!

North West Games 2019 – for Athletes 10+

The 5th Annual NORTH WEST INDOOR GAMES takes place on Saturday December 28th, 2019 at AIT Indoor Arena. All Clubs in Connacht have been invited to take part.

View following document for more details:

https://ireland.entry4sports.com/wp-json/view/60554/1573811261

Important:

Note that the organisers for the event are only allowing particular counties take part in the u12 60m sprint and u12 60m hurdles. Longford AC children can NOT take part in these events.

Please note that last years event was a very long day. We had close to 10 athletes taking part, and many were there from early morning until late evening. This is a particular problem if your child is taking part in sprints and then has to hang around for a middle distance event typically held later in the day.

The first event starts at 10am, detailed timetable and order of events will be issued a few days before. The Events are based on 2019 age groups (*you can move up a year for more challenge!)

Deadline for Longford AC entries is 9pm on Thursday December 12th.

If your child is interested to compete please email longfordac@gmail.com with child’s name, date of birth and events they want to enter (maximum is 3 events).

This competition is optional and is a pre-season warm up!

Raffle Tickets Sales in Longford Centre

Longford Centre are kindly allowing to sell raffle tickets this Saturday 7th December. We sold close to €2000 worth of tickets here in one day last month – so this is a great opportunity for the club to raise funds for our indoor training facility. Longford AC Weekly News – 2nd Dec 2019

Brilliant Bronze for Yemi

Well done to Yemi Talabi on a very strong performance last Saturday at the SIAB Schools’ Pentathlon International in Glasgow. All her effort on the day reaped rewards as she achieved 4 new PB’s in 60m Hurdles, High Jump, 800m in her total score. Yemi was the second highest scorer on Team Ireland and helped her squad to win Bronze. Super result for Yemi in a challenging competition with many of the 5 events out of her usual comfort zone. She finished 6th overall in a field of 16 competitors.

Ganly’s Longford Sports Awards 2019

Congratulations to all our recipients of awards at the Ganly’s Longford Sports Awards 2019 held in the Longford Arms Hotel on Friday night last. Well done to our individual sports star award winners of Yemi Talabi, Cian McPhillips, Niamh Kiernan and Barry Sheil. Due to her competing in Glasgow over the weekend, Yemi’s sister Fumi collected the award on her behalf. Congratulations also to Donal Mulligan who was recognised for his excellent marathon performances during 2019 as well as his recent international cross country representation. A massive congratulations also to Patsy Kenny, Life President of Longford Community Games, who was named the 2019 Hall of Fame inductee. Patsy has given great service to the community games movement in the county over the best part of the last five decades and is certainly a worthy recipient. Well done to all award winners on the night. Thank you to the Longford Leader, Longford Sports Partnership, Ganly’s and all the sponsors for a great evening.
