Royal Canal Camino Walk
The Walk takes place this Saturday, October 1. There is a choice of distance of either 18 or 36-kilometres of a route alongside the Royal Canal towards St. Mel’s Cathedral. Coach transfer before the walk will bring participants from the event HQ at St. Mel’s College to the respective starting points at Corlea and Abbeyshrule. The walk is a fundraiser for the completion of our new indoor athletics centre at the College. Full details at www.royalcanalcamino.ie

Ray Flynn Mile
A very enjoyable evening last Wednesday for our Ray Flynn Mile event which also saw the opening of the indoor centre. There was great interest in the Fastest Feet 10-metre time trial for 8-year-olds held on the new indoor track. Congratulations to local children Vilte Krasikova and Jairo Aklassou who were the fastest girl and boy. Both have won a fantastic prize of representing Ireland at the Millrose Games in New York next February as part of the Fastest Kid in the World event.

The mile event started and finished on the grounds of St. Mel’s College which was fitting to mark 40 years of the Irish mile record being held by former student Ray. We were delighted to welcome Ray back to Longford for the event and it was great to see so many of our juvenile athletes among the entrants. First men’s finisher was Cian McPhillips in a swift 4:17 with 14-year-old Emma Brennan the ladies winner in an excellent 5:20. Thanks to all that joined us on the evening, those that helped out with the staging of the event and our thanks to St. Mel’s College.

Cross Country
The Schools Cross Country took place on Sunday last with plenty of exciting racing on show. Moyne Community School once again played host to the action and our thanks to the school for allowing us stage the event. Full report next week.

Clonguish Success
Congratulations to the Clonguish Community Games girls Under-12 gaelic football team, including many of our club members, that won gold at the National Team Finals in Limerick on Saturday.
