Irish Life Health National Indoor Junior & U23 Championships
28 January 2018 at AIT

A new first for the Club at the start of the New Year- 3 juveniles competed in the National Indoor Junior Championships on Sunday 28th January at AIT.

Killian Rawle events: 60m-7.50 sec , 200m-24.12 sec

Nelvin Appiah events: 200m- 22.71 sec in heat, high jump Gold at 1.90m

Gospel Idahor events: 200m-27.57 sec, long jump-4.13m

Junior athletes must be 16 years old on the 31st December in the year of competition and under 20 years on the 31st December in the year of competition. This means competing in one age group for athletes aged 16-17-18-19 years.

There was a variety of track distances (60m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 60m Hurdles, 3km Walk) available as well as several field events (High Jump, Pole Vault, Long Jump, Triple Jump , Shot Putt). As there were large numbers of entries all races had heats to qualify for finals, with standards high as all 4 year age categories now competing together.

As this was the first taste of competition at this level it was hoped that the outing would prove to be test at the start of the Indoor season to see where each was at before the Connacht Track & Field Championships at the end of February.

Congratulations to Nelvin Appiah winning 1st place Gold in Junior Mens High Jump competing against his usual rivals Jerry Kearney, Craughwell, & Joseph McEvoy, Nenagh Olympic. He progressed from 1.65m to 1.90m with a clean sheet to take the title.
